New wing on historic school building uses acrylcolor windows

The new wing for the elementary and middle school in the Baden city of Gernsbach presented the architects responsible with a difficult challenge. The goal of the project was to connect the historical main building with the annex that was built in the Seventies. The difficulty lay in making the connecting structure with a character of its own, yet at the same time supported the appearance of the historical complex.

The desire was to have window casements with a metallic effect building large wall sections that would then be broken by large, colourful stucco elements. The parapet above the library was to be made with a special technique that used standard window elements arranged atop each other.

Vinyl windows prevail through economy

In designing a facade, economy and architectural design are two criteria that are often at odds with each other, often forcing unsatisfying compromises. Builders and designers often reach their limits all too soon, especially in the choice of windows. In days of limited finances, investments in public structures have to be affordable in purchase, but also cost-effective in the long term. This is especially true for windows in school buildings, where special heating and maintenance costs play a major role. For the school in Gernsbach, expensive aluminium window frames were just as undesirable as high-maintenance wooden frames. The choice of windows for the annex thus fell on aluminium-coloured vinyl window frames. Compared to other frames, they are more economic, due to their maintenance-free, long lifespans.

acrycolor tone "Silver" exceeds high expectations

With coloured vinyl window frames, not all colors are the same. The method used to apply colour plays a huge role in the quality of the finished window. For the school in Gernsbach, the architects recommended to the municipal planners vinyl windows with a silvery external facade. GEALAN\'s acrylcolor windows, made with the coextrusion technique, met all of the criteria for a long, worry-free window lifespan. The union of the two molten components – PVC and acrylic – create a silken outer surface on the profile that can withstand sun, wind, rain and cold. Windows with acrylcolor profiles are colourfast, maintenance-free, scratch resistant, weather resistant and easy to clean. These arguments convinced the Gernsbach municipal planning commission to choose acrylcolor windows with metallic silver coloring from the GEALAN S 8000 IQ profile series.
