EMAS – the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme

In 1996 GEALAN began – after the implementation of the ISO 9001 quality management system – a new environmental management system according to the EG directive for the voluntary participation of industrial business in a cooperative system for environmental management and environmental impact evaluation. In doing so they used the then-draft version of the ISO 14001 environmental management system.
In June 1996 the Oberkotzau and Tanna sites received their first validations. GEALAN was thus the first European PVC processor with this stringent management system.
The EG Eco Audit Directive was replaced in 2001 by the new EMAS directive, which integrated ISO 14001, stronger participation by coworkers and an evaluation of environmental aspects (production and products).
The EMAS steps to first validation
1. First environmental inspection
2. Creation of an environmental policy
3. Setup of an eco-management system
4. Creation of an eco-management system
5. Test review of the environmental impact
6. First draft of an environmental statement
7. Validation by an independent third party
8. Registration and publication of the environmental statement.
Why do companies submit to the stringent EG Eco Audit?
81% to improve the internal environmental protection measures
75% for legal security
63% to improve their image
50% for improved cooperation with the authorities
38% for the cost savings
19% for other competitive advantages and
6% for less bureaucracy more streamlined regulations
