Sustainability certification at European level

GEALAN is a long-standing partner to VinylPlus®, Europe’s largest recycling initiative, and in September 2019 received sustainability certification in accordance with this organisation’s catalogue of criteria.
Its products’ long service life plays an important role here, especially in high-end construction such as for window profiles and the use of recyclates. In addition, the materials used are no longer separated at highly specialised companies, but are instead supplied for recycling via nationwide collection systems. A high number of old windows will be accumulated over the next few years as part of measures aimed at energy-efficient building refurbishment, with reuse being preferred over incineration. This principle is one of the key tenets of VinylPlus®, which is a voluntary commitment by the European PVC industry to sustainable economic activity. The initiative sets out specific recycling targets and proactively supports the European PVC industry’s sustainability goals. Almost 740,000 t of PVC were recycled as part of this voluntary project in 2018, corresponding to an increase of 15.6% on the previous year. This means that 92.4% of the target for 2020 has already been reached.
